Frequently asked questions

PDO (polydioxanone) threads are absorbable materials similar to those used as internal stitches in surgery. When used for cosmetic purposes, the threads are inserted under the skin to provide a lifting and tightening effect. PDO threads are unique in that they slowly dissolve over time whilst stimulating collagen production in the treated area.

There are two different types of PDO threads used at Melbourne Skin & Dermatology: mono threads and twin screw threads. Mono threads are thinner and are used for fine lines and wrinkles, while twin screw threads provide more volumisation and some lifting effects in sunken areas.

PDO threads work by stimulating collagen production in the treated area. When the threads are inserted into the skin, they create a controlled injury, which triggers the body’s natural healing response. This response includes the production of new collagen, which helps tighten the skin. The threads are inserted and deployed into the skin using a needle.

PDO thread treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in as little as 30 minutes by a registered nurse. The procedure involves the insertion of PDO threads into the skin using a needle. The number of threads required will depend on the individual’s unique needs and the area being treated.

After the treatment, patients may experience some minor bruising or swelling, but this should subside within a few hours. It is recommended that patients avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment to minimise the risk of bruising.

PDO threads slowly dissolve over time, typically taking around 3-4 months to fully dissolve. During this time, the threads will continue to stimulate collagen production, providing long-lasting results.
PDO thread treatment is often compared to dermal fillers, as both treatments are used to combat the signs of aging. However, while dermal fillers work by adding volume to the face, PDO threads also provide a lifting and tightening effect.

PDO thread treatment is also a more longer-lasting solution than dermal fillers, as the threads continue to stimulate collagen production for several months after treatment. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, typically last for around 6-12 months.
While cog threads are used for a more significant lifting effect, PDO mono threads are designed to target fine lines and wrinkles. These threads are thinner than cog threads and are inserted into the skin in various patterns, creating a tightening effect that helps to smooth out wrinkles.

PDO Mono Thread treatment is a popular choice for those who are just starting to notice signs of aging and want to take a preventative approach to combatting fine lines and wrinkles.
