CO2 Laser Resurfacing | Acne scarring treatment| Skin rejuvenation

CO2 laser resurfacing is a procedure performed mostly by dermatologists for patients who wish to improve the general quality of the skin and address problematic conditions such as acne scarring.

With laser resurfacing, it is possible to reverse some of the signs of skin ageing, using non-invasive fractional CO2 laser performed by trained dermatologists.

Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars and Skin Rejuvenation

CO2 laser resurfacing became a breakthrough treatment when fractional technology emerged.  The term fractional refers to the use of multiple small columns of laser beams with spaces in between rather than larger beams which target the entire surface of the skin.  This allows the surrounding untreated skin to be a source of stem cells and growth factors to regenerate the laser treated skin.

This technology has allowed more intense settings to be used safely, reducing damage to the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) and enhancing collagen production.  This means that the treatment is most ideal for conditions such as acne scarring and sun induced ageing of the skin (photoageing).  The skin undergoes regeneration and recontouring to even out imperfections resulting from rolling, atrophic, and ice-pick scars. This treatment, administered by trained dermatologists, can also enhance the general texture and tone of the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines as well as treat pre-cancerous sun spots.

How does resurfacing work?

Skin resurfacing using lasers is nothing new. However, only a state-of-the-art CO2 laser is capable of delivering a high-energy light beam capable of improving skin imperfections.

  • Deep skin rejuvenation is possible with CO2 laser resurfacing. This is thanks to the ablative laser energy stimulating renewed elastin and collagen growth.
  • Acne scarring can be improved significantly. CO2 laser is one of several other forms of treatments used for acne scrring.
  • CO2 laser treatments can enhance the texture and tone of the skin and address dull skin.
  • Over the following 6 months after treatment, patients can expect to see ongoing tissue tightening, increasing firmness of the skin with improvement in fine lines. The result is a more even, youthful and rested appearance of the skin.

Who benefit most from CO2 laser Resurfacing?

Clinical studies have proven that CO2 laser resurfacing is an effective treatment for improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe atrophic acne scars. Resurfacing is an ideal treatment option for those with lighter skin and visible acne scarring and wrinkles.  Improvements can also be made to stretch marks, sun spots and signs of premature aging.

It is similarly possible to lessen the appearance of other skin imperfections. In each case, though, it is necessary to consult with a qualified dermatologist to discuss possible treatment benefits.

Is the procedure safe?

Complications with this treatment when performed by qualified dermatologists are rare.  A thorough clinical assessment is essential to discuss your treatment to ensure the safest, yet most effective treatment settings are selected.  Prescription medications and creams are often used to improve healing time and reduce the rate of complications such as infections and scarring. These prescriptions may include treatments specifically for your skin type and may require them to be made up at compounding pharmacies such as our partner pharmacy, Skin Plus Compounding Pharmacy.

Typical skin healing times vary but usually range from 5-14 days.

How much does laser resurfacing cost?

Costs for procedures vary depending on the areas treated, the size of the area and the  complexity of the treatment.  Costs can range from $450 to $1400 per treatment.

C02 laser treatments at Melbourne Skin and Dermatology are performed exclusively by dermatologist, Dr. Chris Jalilian.

Is laser resurfacing right for you?

A consultation by an experienced practitioner is most essential to determine if this treatment is right for you. Whilst our nurse and dermal therapist do not perform this procedure, you may wish to book with them for an initial complementary consultation.  The treatment can be further explored with Dr Chris Jalilian if this is deemed to be the right treatment for you.
